Our story is still being written...

But this is how it all began...

Avalon Microsanctuary was quite literally wished into being in June, 2020, by a girl turning sweet 16.Before she could legally drive a car, she was already heavily involved in animal activism -- attending marches and rallies, and volunteering at rescues and sanctuaries in the Portland area. But that wasn't enough. She wanted to do more....
After asking to start a microsanctuary for her birthday, her first official rescues were two piglets, Trouble & Victor.  She whisked them out of a bad situation and set them up in a makeshift pen in the back yard for a couple weeks, until suitable accommodations at a farm sanctuary could be arranged. They were quickly followed by ducks, chickens, roosters, quail, kittens and finally, some sweet foster bunnies.  As the summer carried on, and the household (and suburban Portland neighborhood) adjusted to life with animals, we learned that the need for helping bunnies was great, and that bunnies were also the easiest for us to help while living in a typical house.
It wasn't long before our foster bunnies became long-term residents. And then, as bunnies do, they multiplied. Not in the way you think (they were all boys). But more came. And more, and more.As Avalon grew, so to did our knowledge of how to properly care for these beautiful, fragile creatures.
Bunnies are now our main focus, but, in coordination with other sanctuaries in the PNW, we continue rescue efforts for other animals in need. And the girl? In her spare time, she works at an exotics vet clinic and is a full time college student. We don't know what we'd do without the volunteers who help things run smoothly around here - the friends who foster, transport, help clean and play with bunnies at the house, and the folks who have generously donated funds to help us help these special creatures.
What does the future hold for Avalon?  Well, like we said, our story is still being written, but vet school and a farm property both seem like good ideas...
